Story of a Middle Travancore Girl (short story)
This is the narrative of Susan. Her original name was Sosamma Idiculla. She was named after her grandmother who moreover had a similar name, Sosamma.In their families, young girls had only one of these names, Sosamma,Achamma, Aleyamma or Tresiamma. Their lineages brag of a foundation set apart by a couple of hundred years and it was finally put to print by a person from the families a resigned educator of seventy years following a long time of research. Her father was a copra(dried coconut kernal) temporary worker. Her mother who wore just white dresses was a homemaker and made brilliant fish curries. For the acrid taste, she used a particular kind of tamarind that resembles a ball. Susan was the just one in the family who passed the Matriculation Examination. In the 1940-s, when Susanna was youthful, this is a desired accomplishment. Her ancestry had numerous charming figures. One was her great uncle who in the wake of appreciating hard stuff the night will get back home intersection paddy fields and quarrel with his better half in the following manner – ‘When I crossed the Ninety Nine, was I nibbled’ by “polakan’?.Ninety nine is the name for the paddy field.Polakan is a type of snake.If she disclosed to him that he was chomped, he will beat her telling how she can be so certain about that.If she revealed to him that he was not bitten,he will enlighten that she was mixed up regarding it and beat her.If she told that she doesn’t have a clue, again he will beat her advising she should know such things..
